Erick Sahler’s illustrated prints salute the common but often overlooked cultural events and institutions — like Pony Penning, scrapple, Smith Island cake and Assateague bonfires — that make life in the mid-Atlantic region so special.
“This area is chockfull of so many great traditions that make it such a wonderful place to live and make art,” Sahler said. “I want to celebrate them all.”
Sahler is a Salisbury, Md., native. He is a University of Maryland Baltimore County graduate and has created artwork for clients across the mid-Atlantic since 1983. In 2015, he was elected to the Society of Illustrators in New York.
Sahler’s work is in the permanent collection of the National Park Service Headquarters in Staten Island, New York, and the National Park Service’s Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center near Cambridge, Maryland, as well as Salisbury University, TidalHealth Richard Henson Cancer Institute, and University of Delaware Library Special Collections & Museum.
It has been exhibited at the National Folk Festival, the Lowe House Office Building in Annapolis, the Historic Odessa Foundation in Delaware, Franklin College in Franklin, Indiana, and at three ICON international illustrator conferences in Baltimore, Minneapolis and Detroit.
